PERSONAL ADS

In this age of high-tech and instant dating, it is perhaps surprising that good old personal ads still have a place when meeting people. Whether you advertise – or respond to ads – in your local rag, Time Out or other city guide or in a national broadsheet, it is probably the most impersonal way of meeting someone.

In spite of the fact that I have some close friends who met and married via the personal ads in the Guardian, I can never quite get over the fact that I suspect that the ads are littered with weird, crossdressing bondage addicts from the boondocks, all claiming to be tall, handsome, solvent and with the essential GSOH.

It’s important that you follow the safety guidelines outlined for Internet dating on pp. 168-172 above if you are going to meet anyone from a personal ad, and not to have too high an expectation. Like a lot of shop-soiled, one careful owner, goods advertised in the local paper, these guys might not reach the high safety standards that we require! If you do want to take a chance on placing or replying to a personal ad, here are a few basic tips.

• Use a reputable newspaper or magazine, preferably one that reflects your interests, or is in your neighbourhood.

• Choose or place an ad where you can call a voice mail number. You can tell a lot about potential chemistry from someone’s voice.

• When placing an ad, be honest about your assets. Describe yourself truthfully – your hair colour, build, age and height. Stand out from the crowd. If you have an interesting hobby or music taste, describe them.

• Say what you are looking for in a man. Don’t be too prescriptive, or your mailbox will be empty, but list what’s important to you. If you are looking for a tall man or a sporty or younger man, say so.

• Use your imagination and humour. Saying that you are a 5ft 6inch, blue-eyed, 25-year-old slim brunette looking for a 6ft, blond-haired man, just doesn’t cut it in the personal ad pages. It says nothing about the person that you are or what common interests you are looking for.
